Fix the Short Circuits
While the United States Supreme Court is the most well known court in the country, it’s actually the federal Courts of Appeals – the Circuit Courts – that are the courts of last resort for most Americans. The overwhelming majority of cases never reach the Supreme Court, which hears fewer than 90 cases each year. In sharp contrast, the Circuit Courts decide about 35,000 cases annually.
Many of those tens of thousands of cases involve such critical issues as voting rights, fair pay, clean drinking water and clean air, reproductive freedom, medical safety, consumer protection, and employment discrimination. This means that Circuit Courts have the final say in cases that affect all of us in our daily lives, and that filling vacancies on those courts with highly-qualified judges is enormously important to all Americans, everywhere.
But it’s getting harder and harder to fill those vacancies. As you know, Senate Republicans have been engaged in the unprecedented obstruction of President Obama’s judicial nominees. Now, with pundits predicting that the Senate may change hands in the November elections, the time for moving on President Obama’s nominees may be growing short.
Make sure that your Senators stand up to Senate Republicans and fill the vacancies on the all-important Circuit Courts! Email your Senators today and ask them to tell Majority Leader Reid to schedule yes or no votes on all pending Circuit Court nominees.
The scheduling of Senate votes on judicial nominees is largely in the hands of Majority Leader Harry Reid, who is juggling many other legislative priorities yet must find the time to move the Circuit Court nominees. But he needs to hear from his Senate colleagues that doing so is a real priority.
That’s where you come in. We need you to contact your Senators today and ask them to tell Majority Leader Reid to schedule yes or no votes on the pending Circuit Court nominees as soon as possible. Senator Reid needs to know that his Senate colleagues want him to “clear the calendar” and fill the vacancies on the all-important federal appellate courts.
With the fall elections fast approaching, time is growing short! Email your Senators today and ask them to tell Majority Leader Reid to make voting on nominees to the all-important Circuit Courts a real priority.
